Astaxanthin is a marine carotenoid, which possess powerful biological antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. The purpose of the attached NIH (National Institute of Health) study was to investigate inhibitory effect of astaxanthin against inflammation-related colon cancer and colitis in male mice.

The results of suggest that the dietary astaxanthin suppresses the colitis and colitis-related colon carcinogenesis in mice, partly through inhibition of the expression of inflammatory cytokine and proliferation. The findings suggest that astaxanthin is one of the candidates for prevention of colitis and inflammation-associated colon cancer in humans.
