Astaxanthin for Osteoarthritis

Astaxanthin for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA), a common degenerative disorder affecting more than 240 million people, is a primary cause of disability. The disease is strongly age-dependent and is characterized by increased destructive alteration of articular cartilage, synovial tissue, and formation of bone spurs.

This study demonstrated that astaxanthin can maintain cartilage homeostasis. It can also exert anti-arthritic effects by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress. Study results also demonstrate that astaxanthin treatment can reduce cartilage destruction. The study findings provide comprehensive insights into the bioactivity of astaxanthin in osteoarthritis progression and suggest the use of astaxanthin for early stage treatment of osteoarthritis.
